12 September 2022

If you’re a fan of tennis, you most probably know that Roger Federer, one of the most successful tennis players of all time, has been missing from the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Tour since his last professional match in 2021.

What happened to Federer? Has he retired? Is he coming back soon? And what is he doing now? Here is everything you need to know about Roger Federer today.

What Happened to Roger Federer?

Roger Federer is currently out of the ATP Tour due to knee surgery. After his quarter-final loss to world #9 Hubert Hurkacz at Wimbledon 2021, Federer announced he was to undergo arthroscopic surgery soon, his 3rd time in 1.5 years. His right knee had been giving him problems since 2020 when he had two separate surgeries in February and March of 2020.

After his Wimbledon loss, his surgery began soon after, and he’s been in recovery ever since. As of February 2022, Federer himself reported to his sponsor, Credit Suisse, that he wasn’t allowed to run or jump by his doctors.

Has Roger Federer Retired?

The answer is no, Roger Federer has not resigned. In fact, he is making a comeback in 2022. Though he missed Wimbledon 2022, a tournament he won 8 times in his 20+ professional playing career, he was seen at the tournament’s venue, which was The Centre Court to celebrate its 100th anniversary.

In an interview with the publication Caminada, Federer’s agent, Tony Godsick, stated 20-time Grand Slam champion, does not have plans of retiring soon. In fact, he is set to return to play competitively in 2022 and would retire on his own terms, and not just because he is set back by an injury. Godsick stated that Federer will retire when he is healthy and still successful as a professional player.

When Is He Returning to Play Professionally?

Federer confirmed that he is set to play at the Laver Cup on September 23 to 25, alongside Rafael Nadal, as Team London. The tournament will be held at 02 Arena in London. The Laver Cup hits close to home since Federer is one of the founders, which was established in 2017. He was inspired by the Ryder Cup golf tournament in the US.

He also confirmed his participation at the Swiss Indoors Basel tennis tournament in his home country, to be held between October 24 to 30, 2022. His first game in the said tournament will be on October 25.

Apart from these two tournaments, though, Federer has not made any other plans.

What Has Roger Federer Been Up To?

While recovering from his knee surgery, Federer has been busy. In recent months, he trains and plays tennis 4 to 5 times a week. When he isn’t doing that, he is designing a new shoe with On-Running, called The Roger Clubhouse Mid. Aside from his business ventures, he is also busy with his philanthropic activities, having visited Malawi for his The Roger Federer Foundation, which seeks to provide education to underprivileged kids around the world.

Federer is also active on social media, often keeping his fans updated about this recovery, training, personal travels, advocacies, and more.
